Cold email crash course (+315 remote roles)
This is The Nonlinear Project, a newsletter featuring hand-curated remote roles, interviews with hiring managers, and career tips on getting ahead & being productive. Many roles in the round up aren’t featured on other job boards. If you enjoy the content, please give it a like and share it with friends. If you are interested in being a part of our community, I’d love to have you join the membership.
❶ Cold email career crash course
One of the things that I’ve heard talking to people in the community is some variation of “I’ve been applying to roles but I haven’t had a lot of success and I’m not sure why.”
This week I’m testing out something new in the Slack group. I’m going to be running a small group session that’s a bit of career crash course. The focus is:
Fix anything that might be in your blindspots that’s stopping you from landing an interview.
Refine your bio and CV.
Define what types of roles and companies you’re interested in working for.
Find companies that match and start sending out targeted cold emails.
Ask for feedback when unsuccessful and iterate.
Also: start or ramp up putting content out on your preferred platform around the role that you’re interested in.
The goal here is to land you interviews and (maybe, hopefully) a role. This is partially inspired by the MorningBrew team on Twitter talking about how cold emails have played a key role for people landing a role there.
Also: my last two roles I’ve landed via cold email.
I’m keeping the group very small; on the high end, 10 people.
Aiming to meet up in a private Slack channel for an hour 2-3x/week and run for 4 weeks. First one will start tomorrow, December 1st, at 12pm EST.
Open to all members who are actively looking for a new role.
❷ Community fund
Per the last newsletter, I’ve started a community fund. From now until the end of the year, 25% of new memberships are going into a fund to support one person in the community that’s building a side project, and who could use a little extra support. Funds can be used for anything. This is small; there’s about of $100 in the fund currently.
If you’re interested in submitting your project for consideration, you can do so here.
If nothing else, submitting a project gives me a better sense of what you’re building, what you’re interested in, and I may be able to connect to you to someone else in the community that can help or with similar interests.
❸ Top digital health remote companies
A while back, I came across the CB Insights Digital Health 150 list. It features a range of startups that are transforming healthcare. Digging through the list, I was actually quite surprised to find that a good number of the companies were remote or open to remote candidates for some roles.
In a quest to figure out what are some of the best digital health startups to work for, I conducted an informal survey of current employees. Below I present to you the top three startups from that survey, all which are hiring remotely.
Cedar is a healthcare financial engagement platform that creates customized interactions for every patient. Hiring for Partnerships and Operations.
Lunit is an AI software company building medical image analytics and novel imaging biomarkers via cutting-edge deep learning technology. Lunit is especially focused on conquering cancer. Hiring a for a Backend Engineer, a Research Scientist, and a Research Engineer.
